Underground gunpowder factory (SWE)

It’s been quite some time since the last time I posted anything on here. For different reasons, there has been little or no time for that. But now that I’m back, I’ll give you a famous Swedish gunpowder factory. If you’re interested in urban exploring, you’ve probably seen the place before or been there. If not, I’ll recommend the place. It’s a perfect urban exploring location. As I’m living in Norway, we had to travel quite far to get there.

The place itself is an old gunpowder factory used during WW2. It contains two parts; one part underground and one part above the ground. The place for the factory was chose because it’s strategic location. It was in the middle of the country, but still connected with railway and high standard roads. The factory was producing gunpowder during WW2, and the production stopped the day the war came to an end. The factory was used as a backup until 1973, but has been abandoned since. All the entrances to the underground factory has been sealed several times, but one of the entrances has remained open as people has dug through the dirt in front of the entrance and broke down the brick wall. This spring they were planning on sealing the place of with concrete, but luckily they hadn’t started yet when we were there.

I’ve only covered the part that lays underground, as we couldn’t find the part above the ground before we had to head home. The reason is simply that we had a map showing us where the underground factory were, but not the factory built outside. People usually struggle to find the underground part, so I guess we were both lucky and unlucky at the same time. As we were underground in a completely sealed place, there was no light at all. Which means that all the pictures includes flash, and the quality on the pictures is generally poor. I apologize in advance.

You can find my friends pictures here.

“Forbjudet område”-sign, translated: “Prohibited area”. This was the first sign we encountered.

I don’t really know the use of this building, but I’m guessing that is were used as some kind of outpost, as it’s just outside the gate to the area.

The gate to the area with the underground entrances. The sign says “Facility alarmed”.

About 100 meters away from the underground factory is a newer weapon storage room. But this place is of course alarmed, so we didn’t attempt to get in.

IMG_9463
One of the closed entrances. In addition to the stones covering the door they have built a brick wall just inside the gate.

Another closed entrance.

The only entrance still open.

“Stairway to hell”. We didn’t try to walk up the stairs. As you might notice, the wood is completely  rotten.

IMG_9472
I don’t actually know the use of this room, but it looks like some kind of pump, perhaps for the ventilation.

The white thing is connected to the “ventilation-room”.

The drying machine was quite big.

This is the Holländeri-room. I’m not sure how to translate that.

Some of the items inside the facility collected, probably put there by a fellow urban explorer.

  1. […] This was one of the darkest places I’ve ever explored, and just a LED headlamp really was not enough to either see nor photograph. These are probably not the best photos out there, but they’ll give you a decent idea of how it looked like inside the factory. For someone who’s slightly afraid of the dark and small spaces, this was a pretty heart-pounding experience. The ceiling was dripping everywhere, and faint noises were constantly heard. Getting out after being in there for an hour was rather strange because of the extreme temperature differences. Not only was the factory dark and damp, but awfully cold as well. This was still an incredible experience, and it feels almost unreal thinking back at it. If you want to see the pictures my companion took click here […]
